Taylor, Butterfly Bush, Pear (Staged Figurative and Floral Color Photograph)

2015

About the Item

Archival pigment print, 10 x 10 inches on 17 x 22 inch paper ($2000) Also available in 24 x 24 inches ($3500) and 32 x 32 inches ($4500) Composed in a subdued palette of cream, ivory, pale pink, olive, and deep blue, this photograph by artist duo Kahn & Selesnick combines the classically beautiful with the carnivalesque. The image depicts a young man floating in a shallow pool. He is surrounded by flora, an overt reference to the tragic Ophelia. Part of Kahn and Selesnick's Dreams of a Drowning World series, this image is a single thread to be woven into a greater narrative. Artist statement: The contemporary saga of collaborative duo, Kahn & Selesnick, continues to evolve as the artists release new images from Dreams of the Drowning World. The visual narrative speaks to the delicate balance between nature’s luscious beauty and the threat of its loss. The defeat illustrated between man and nature is stunningly beautiful as the characters are surrounded by abundant flora and objects of their past-time amidst the rising waters. The mid-19th century painting of a drowning Ophelia is referenced in the six foot tall prints of vertical God-like figures, appearing peaceful and dreamlike as they float in a motionless marsh. Smaller, arch-topped vignettes offer a reverent view on figures that lay in a transcendent state of surrender. This elaboration on the Truppe Fledermaus series is perhaps proof of the artist’s deeply imaginative, if cautionary, contemplation.

  • Clam Shells (Still Life Photograph of Purple & White Shells with Drift Wood)
    By David Halliday
    Located in Hudson, NY
Still life photograph of purple and white clam shells on pale grey and beige background archival pigment print, made in 2007 by David Halliday 10 X 15 inches unframed Edition of 25 In this series, Halliday captures the beauty of 'the ordinary' in still lifes of various objects and vegetation arranged against simple backgrounds. This nautical themed still life of deep purple and white clam shells beside a piece of drift wood is set on a light grey table top against a cream colored wood wall. The subtle color palette extenuates the various textures and gentle shadows cast on the objects. About the artist: American, b. 1958, Glen Cove, NY, United States, based in Schodack Landing, NY, United States Elegant still lifes bathed in natural light, so masterfully composed one could forget that it is, in fact, a photograph – this is how we’ve come to recognize David Halliday’s work. The artist first gained recognition for his sepia toned silver gelatin prints of common place objects and food staples, emphasized by sublime balances of form, texture, and shadow one could liken to classical painting. In more recent years the artist began embracing his subject matter with modern pops of color in surreal arrangements; vegetables and fruits eccentrically coupled with fish nets and cutlery balanced on undefined tabletops, seeming to float in midair. Now the photographer is retracting his lens to encompass the studio itself as his subject. In a self-portrait of sorts, Halliday skillfully combines elements of his craft in a modest interior view. Halliday was one of the first artists Carrie Haddad began representing when she opened the gallery 27 years ago. Since then he has exhibited nationally and in Europe. He now lives and works in Schodack Landing by way of New Orleans and Nantucket.
