About the Item
This contemporary coastal photograph by Peter Mendelson depicts a white, deep blue, yellow, and lime green geometric lifeguard stand in Miami Beach, Florida. The structure features a yellow roof, a white-paneled exterior with a geometric painted circle with cutout shapes, blue and yellow railings, and a large blue sign on the bottom that reads, "Miami Beach." It sits in the sand, and although the stand takes up the majority of the center of the composition, a muted blue ocean and cloudy grey sky can be seen behind it. The print is made to order, please allow two to three weeks for printing and production. An additional presentation option is that of Acrylic - please contact us to request this style.
"Shape and color: two things that excite me when I am out photographing, and that come together so wonderfully in the iconic lifeguard stands of Miami Beach," the artist says of this work and series. "Quirky and fun, but also built with a utilitarian safety purpose, these lifeguard stands take on even more personality as they age and become weather-beaten. The designs show influences not only of the art deco movement for which much of Miami Beach is known, but also call to mind space-age cartoons like the Jetsons, miniature golf courses, and the general tropical vibe of Miami."
A New Englander in heart and soul, Peter Mendelson currently lives in Weston, Connecticut. After studying history at the University of Virginia and getting his law degree at the University of Pennsylvania, Peter moved to New York City to practice law, where he also started to gain an appreciation of urban architecture and street photography. Mostly self-taught, Peter further refined his vision through workshops conducted by various photographers, including Magnum photographer Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb, landscape photographer Stephen Johnson, and NYC street photographer Phil Penman. Over time, he developed his particular style, using perspective, light, and color to capture the psychological power of urban and coastal spaces.
Whether taken during his visit to the Neon Boneyard in Las Vegas, his explorations of Miami Beach and the Maine coast, or even during commutes to and from New York City, his photographs focus on those things that are often overlooked, but which reward their viewers when given a second, deeper look.
Peter’s work can be seen in exhibits and galleries in New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

- Earth Remains #45Located in Sante Fe, NMThis photograph is representative of two related series of mine that deal with humanity's impact on and relationship with the earth. This relationship is not sustainable. Lately, I have begun to dream of our tortured earth with the remains of our hubris drifting through space, mined to extinction. This work is an attempt to tear through the ugliness of the world we have made, through the blindness of our voracious appetite to the vastness beyond, where beauty cares not for our perception of it.
