'Medusa' is a graphic piece by Rankin and part of the 'Myths, Monsters and Legends' Series. It is a portrait of a nude model covered in black paint. Her head is bent backward, mouth slightly open, directing her hooded gaze towards the camera. Instead of hair, the model's face is framed by black snakes hissing and slithering around her head. The image is inspired by The Gorgon Medusa, whose story is told by Ovid. The black paint on the model's skin poses a graphic contrast against the white background, and her sensual pose clashes with the aggressive snakes swirling around her, perfectly capturing the Gorgon's twisted story.
Raw, unfiltered, and with an edge – pinpointing Rankin’s elusive yet iconic visual language is almost impossible.
