Nadine Rovner
All the While: cinematic photograph, interior w/ Black African American woman

2006

About the Item

Nadine Rovner orchestrates lush cinematic scenes, exploring a visual world of heightened tension, anticipation, anxiety, longing and desire. These carefully staged, richly textured environments are charged with the nostalgia of idealized Americana, yet are embedded with a sense of unease on the surface. This is a world populated by strong yet often detached characters, who peer beyond the edges of the frame, silent witnesses to unsettling narratives that remain unknown. The aesthetics of Americana allow Rovners photographs to address contemporary concerns by creating a setting that is removed from our expectations of reality. Reflecting these emotions, Rovner's photographs are filled with women who struggle against the depiction of one-dimensional objectified appearances. These images advocate for looking beneath the veneer, finding strength over vulnerability. #4/10 and #5/10 available. 2 AP. Includes a 1.25" white border on all edges. Artist will provide a certificate of authenticity with each print as well as an archival sticker with the title, date, edition number, and signature. Rovner holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in New York, California, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Texas, and Washington, DC.

The subjects for his striking and captivating visuals are typically set in the most ordinary environments, drawing the viewer into a charged but serene experience based on composition, palette and formal lines. Saturated in color, the nominal subjects gather a haunting and mesmerizing quality, creating a poignant pretext for the making of a formal color photograph. Decisively capturing the traces left by humanity, Pawassar's images are filled with a sense of universal nostalgia and pay homage to the passage of time and the extinguished moment, referencing documentary and street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastian Salgado...
