About the Item
PHOBIAS
Pezdek’s PHOBIAS expose the absurdist, fearful tendencies from which we all suffer. Concurrently, there is a powerfully implicit optimism running through each work which is conveyed by elegantly mannered elements of form.
Pezdek’s images are allegorical expressions of specific and unusual phobias such as the fear of paper and the fear of being tied up. She creates a voyeuristic quality of witnessing someone’s deepest anxieties which are tangibly exposed in contorted postures and literally overtaken by objects. Distilled down to their essence, these phobias are not simply the insane products of one person’s bizarre imagination; more profoundly, they represent a perverseness universal to humankind, primal fear.
The muted tones of Pezdek’s images express the effects fear has on the human condition. Lacking as the subjects are in a robustness of life, we observe how giving into baseness reduces us and imprisons us. We become slaves to our fears. To be confronted by one who is phobic and paralyzed by a bunch of balloons, for instance, it is plain to see the ridiculous power we allow fear to wield over ourselves. Pezdek’s sober palette also adds a clinical feel to the imagery and offers the viewer a rational approach to the irrational.
Through confrontation of fear, Pezdek’s magnificently artful version of Exposure Therapy, it is possible to overcome these manufactured and self-imposed obstacles. Gazing upon another, we see ourselves. In recognition, there is beauty.
SARAH PEZDEK
The heart of Pezdek’s work lies within the investigation of various enigmas within the human condition as an abstract exploration of its intricacies and idiosyncrasies. Relying on empirical truths and experience of the observed world, Pezdek unveils the psychological aspects of perception in order to ignite a dialog with the audience. Whether that conversation be internal or external, it is an invitation to interrogate our conditioning. Pezdek’s work is a projection of various connections, barriers, beauty and psychology to better understand how the lives we live are directly affected by our personal states of consciousness and awareness.
Though Pezdek considers herself a nature photographer, it is not environment specifically that interests her, but rather human nature and our place within that environment. “We as humans tend to believe that we are masters over nature, taking and destroying under the guise of forward progression as a species. Yet, this behavior is hypocritical as we have yet to even master ourselves. Our conditioning limits our experience and growth. I am curious about what happens if we break free from those confines and tap into what is outside that periphery. What is it about our thought processes, our influences, our environment, culture and society that drives us or hinders us? How do we shape our environment based on these elements, both external and internal? How do we break free from these confines and conditions? By doing so, how does that elevate us and are we capable of this, and sustaining our existence at a higher level of consciousness and mindfulness?” This is what fascinates Pezdek the most as an artist, and the realm of perception she continuously explores in her work.

ABOUT: Inside the gallery, the viewer is surrounded by an arresting display of glamour in the wild. Drawing inspiration from classical paintings and geometric forms, Greg Lotus' work has been compared to Herb Ritts, Man Ray and Richard Avedon, and his exhibition fuses his high fashion background with the rural environment of his youth. Yet Lotus admits to no formal training throughout his career, "I'm completely self-taught, lots of trial and error over the years." His foray into fashion photography was a twist of fate. In the 90s he was sharing living quarters with young models, and began photographing them to help them build their portfolios—work that eventually brought his work to the attention of agencies. When it comes to his own models, Lotus prefers the "unspoiled" types, holding castings to find those with quirk as well as beauty. "Over time, most artists develop their own palette and look using color and light in a very personal way. I express my own aesthetic sense which is what makes my work recognizable, regardless of subject or setting." "Swimmer Cap," is an example of Lotus' signature pop of color. Here, a cast of sinewy models convene in a locker room; their candy-colored swim caps give the piece its surreal, dreamlike quality. In the invitation piece, "Nurses" beauties in black bathing suits pop against a light background while being hosed down by a nurse. "You can almost feel the spray and hear the whoosh under the miniskirt," says Lotus. Besides the visual play on light and dark, he says water is the linking element that turns the piece theatrical and makes it breathe. Greg Lotus was born in 1967 in rural West Virginia. He shot in Paris and New York City before settling in Miami to pursue his craft. After landing his first major job in Europe, Lotus interviewed with the editor of Italian Vogue, Franca Sozzani...Category
