Amelia Bauer’s work is a series of discrete investigations into our cultural conceptions of the natural world. Aesthetic traditions are repositioned to create spaces that exist somewhere between our fears of the uncultivated wild and our romanticism of the “virgin” landscape. In this way Bauer explores the American experience of the frontier -- the transitional landscapes at the boundaries of civilization.
In the American Southwest, where Bauer was born and raised, the unsettled landscape is both inviting and alienating. The promise of the open road with ever expanding possibilities meets the threat of a harsh, dry, inhospitable climate that is riddled with UFO lore and conspiracy theories. Scores of science fiction films have used the deserts of the American Southwest as theirs sets, the rocks and dunes standing in for the terrain of foreign planets.
Bauer’s Moonscapes are one in a 3-part series exploring the desert landscape. Using post-production techniques inspired by cinematic tropes, photographic reality is called into question, as the landscapes become overtly fictional spaces. In Moonscapes, the images have been rotated, drained of color, and re-tinted, the sense of scale made difficult to identify. The result is playfully disorienting.
