Dinesh Boaz Artist Statement My path to the camera changed when I owned a recording studio in Soho, NY where I worked on producing music artists. While sharing these candid moments for hours layering sound upon sound, I realized I was drawn to the visualization of the music rather than purely the instrumentation. Like the great producers that influenced me, I started to visualize frequencies and harmonics as color palettes, and how each new frequency derived a unique visual tone. For me, it was transformative and I now equate this to the glass of the sound booth changing to the glass of the camera lens. My current collection of images results from my work all over the world, in over 25 hours of helicopters flights flying between 500 to 1000 feet above the ground throughout 2016 to 2019. My first flight began with my awakening to the world from above and how to showcase and share its natural beauty. My idea has continued to evolve and today my mission to unravel the new stories and concepts that are created on each flight I take. Despite any pre-planning, each flight is a gateway to a new set of visual ideas waiting to unfold. It is this tension that creates the drive that I live with and the reality of the cramped cockpit studio of a fast-moving helicopter. With the doors off and nothing between my viewfinder and 1,000 feet below to the ground, I look at coordinating altitude, angles, and details on the ground over the radio with my pilot. We can only react together to what we see, and each pass on each location has to be the perfect sync of the pilot’s skills to make precisely timed turns, but also work with the wind patterns, weather conditions, and air traffic along the way. All these elements have to align in harmony with my focal lengths, shutter speeds and compositions to result in the ‘top down’ view of what I capture. As much as the images are deliberate reactions to the environment, I stray away from digital manipulations of what is captured. I want to deliver the viewer a dream-like meditative state - levitating one above the world as it is naturally seen - but closing in on specific ideas and eliciting counter-reactions to be achieved in this process. The themes of remoteness, tranquility, energy and spacelike terrains permeate my work. My lens is most drawn to pockets of color, lines, patterns, curves, and abstractions created in the unlikely merging of opposite landscapes. The interplay of people and humanity display the scale and sheer power of the world - when shown in contrast to massive awe-striking landscapes. What I hope to achieve through my work, is a shared view of the world in a mutually inspired experience. While I might play the role of orchestrator and purveyor of images of the journey through these landscapes, my hope is that the viewer can experience the same feelings of inspiration, calm and positive energy I feel in the helicopter cockpit at 1000 feet. - Dinesh Boaz
