Judith Allen-Efstathiou
"Mapping the Walk - May to August" Photographic Flower Study in Blue and White

2020

About the Item

"Mapping the Walk - May to August" by Judith Allen-Efstathiou is an exquisite cyanotype photographic print on mulberry paper in deep blue and white of wildflowers abstracted. Highly intricate and lavishly depicted, this gorgeous work is mounted on an extremely thin (1/8") piece of aluminum which includes a 3/4" wood backing painted silver for hanging so the photograph itself appears to float on the wall when installed. The aluminum mounting reads as a white edge. The images of the flowers are created from the artist's own drawings which she has photographed for this particular cyanotype print series. "Mapping the Walk" is a sequential work which as a whole is loosely divided into 5 sections and which references the artist's many walks along an ancient footpath on the Greek island of Kea Though flat they read as rich patterns with much dimension and a lacy quality. Light is also critical to the process and this photographic print glows: Judith Allen-Efstathiou "Mapping the Walk - May to August" 2020 Cyanotype on Mulberry Paper Mounted on Aluminum 16. 5 x 43 Inches Self-Framed, No Glass Note: There is a companion to this work also available, identical in size, as well 3 large cyanotypes on mulberry paper with no metal mounts (two at 35.5" x 24" and one at 22" x 28"). Also available are three much smaller related works which are mounted on thin copper (two at 16" x 10" each and one at 14" x 9"). The cyanotype process - no camera necessary - was invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842 and is a photographic printing process that produces blue prints using chemically coated papers with objects laid on top that are exposed to ultraviolet light. Judith Allen-Efstathiou was born in the U.S., raised in New York, and studied visual arts at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tufts University, Medford, MA. She was awarded a Fellowship by the Museum of Fine Arts for one year of international travel which led to a three decade stay in Athens, Greece, where she is now a naturalized Greek citizen. As of 2000 she has been spending 6 months in the U.S. and 6 months in Greece with much time on the island of Kea, documenting her extensive walks along a single footpath with drawings of wildflowers. This 'Mapping the Walk" series has received international attention and it is her hope this spotlight will help preserve not only the flowers but this lovely ancient path. In the U.S. Judith's work focuses on public art depicting the trees of the northern forest and her relief sculptures in acid-cut, vintage copper salvaged from the Maine State House dome hang permanently in the Maine State House.
