About

Lisa DiLillo is a visual artist based in New York who makes photographs, video installations, and single channel videos. The photographs in Heliotrope capture liminal states and reference invisible processes where entities come into being, change form, or dissintegrate. In her work, the process is one of chance, unpredictability, and discovery, mirroring the volatility of Nature. DiLillo has exhibited in numerous NYC based galleries such as CLAMPart, Thierry Goldberg Projects, Krause Gallery, Momenta Art, ODETTA, and Front Room Gallery. She has also exhibited at the Walker Art Center, SF Cinematheque at Center for the Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp/Belgium, the Reina Sofia National Musuem of Art/Madrid, the Memling Musuem/Belgium, the Rotterdam Film Festival, and the Moscow International Festival of Contemporary Dance. She has been awarded an Electronic Arts Grant, a Jerome Foundation Grant, and residencies at The Experimental Television Center in addition to curating programs for the Knitting Factory Video Lounge. The photographic series entitled, "Before the Echo", are reimagined landscapes created by introducing various sources of illumination such as smoke, sparks and fireworks into rural settings. She shoots these ephemeral elements in the woods at night throughout the year. DiLillo is interested in depicting not what can be normally seen, but an underlying visual potentiality using light, the facilitator and very essence of the photographic process, as a tool to visualize what one can only intuit. The photographs capture liminal states and reference invisible processes where entities come into being, change form, or disintegrate. These lightscapes emerge from the shroud of the canopy in unpredictable ways and as a result her process is one of chance and discovery. This unprecitability mirrors the volatility of nature itself, and foreshadows unexpected environmental tranformations on our horizon.
