Stephen Mallon
"Weeks 297" Sea Train, Subway Reef Photograph by Stephen Mallon 40"x60" unframed

2008

About the Item

C-Print Photograph, edition 3 of 5 - 40"x60" signed and editioned on reverse by the artist. Presented unframed. This photograph documents the creation of artificial reefs along the Atlantic Coast. Stacks of New York City subway cars sit atop a barge at sea. The blue-grey water, shows a white wave cresting in foreground with the lines of subway train cars stacked on top of each other center of the composition. This unusual recycling program created artificial reefs along United States East Coast utilizing the decommissioned NYC subway cars. From 2001 to 2010, the MTA, which runs the city’s subways, re-purposed thousands of decommissioned subway cars by submerging them into the ocean off eastern seaboard states such as New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and South Carolina. There, the urban relics become artificial reefs, providing safe habitats for marine life. Photographer Stephen Mallon spent two years documenting the project, and his images are now on view at the New York Transit Museum‘s Grand Central Terminal Annex in a new exhibition. In a bold move, the NYC Transit authority joined the artificial reef building program off the East Coast and sent stripped and decontaminated subway cars off on barges to be dropped into the Ocean in order to build refuge for many species of fish and crustaceans which would colonize the structures. Mallon traces the progress of the train cars on their way towards their last voyage, majestic waves approach the viewer in these large scale photographs as they too are transported out to sea to behold the lifting and transfer of these massive machines. Mallon's photographs elicit both the sadness and the beauty of cascading water overtaking these iconic figures of New York transit as they sink beneath the surface of the water; surges and sprays are caught in time. Stephen Mallon dedicated the last three years to following this endeavor, chronicling the last phase of NYC Transit's involvement in this program. The photographs that are presented in this exhibition capture the grandiosity of this effort; the weight of these 18-ton train cars can be felt as they are ferried off and plunged into the water. In "Next Stop Atlantic" series Mallon determinedly tracks the final stage of the lives of these, once indispensable modes of transit for passengers on the New York subway lines, canonizing them in New York history. Stephen Mallon's photographs have been featured in numerous publications and media including: The New York Times, New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, artnet, Vanity Fair, NBC, CBS, Resource Magazine and Wired as well as numerous other national and international publications

  • Craig y Don Pool, Llandudno Beach, Wales - Blue British Swimming Pool Sea Photo
    By Richard Heeps
    Located in Cambridge, GB
Craig y Don Pool, looking across the bay of Llandudno, Wales in the United Kingdom. Blue symmetry guides your eyes out to sea in this photograph by Richard Heeps. This artwork is a limited edition of 25 gloss photographic print from negative, accompanied by a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity. We recommend the print is professionally framed. This artwork is available in other sizes and it pairs well with Richard Heeps artworks in our 1stdibs store. "Richard Heeps' seductive, highly saturated colours and sophisticated pictorial structures demonstrate a true love and empathy for his subject matter - be it cool descriptive interiors, still life or landscape. His distinctive style pushes the limits of photography." He is a film-based photographer, using a range of vintage analogue cameras. He considers himself to have three studios, the external studio of whichever location he may be shooting, his darkroom where I make my master prints and his home studio where he does the postproduction where the artworks are mounted framed and finished. He aims to make accessible artwork without compromising on quality and making everything in house he is in control of each step to achieve that. Although he was brought up in East Anglia (England), he was heavily influenced by America. he visited American bases, kept magazine cuttings and followed drag racing. The speed, lifestyle and technicolour is reflected in his imagery. 'American' colour is a major aspect in his work, it drives his equipment and material choices. At age ten he began participating in art shows and became comfortable with showing his work and the praise and criticism which is part of an artists development. In his early paintings Manhattan was reoccurring theme, fascinated with New York. Throughout his professional career he has been lucky enough to exhibit in Museums and Public Galleries since the 1980's. Since 2008 his gallery Bleach Box...

"private history turned into an intimate mythology of elemental fantasies where reality is perceived through a veil of psychedelic memories and unconscious projections. such is a collection of passions and dreams, an uncanny diary of ephemeral narratives and mental intensities in Stefanie Schneider’s painterly photographs where subjectivity of an ontological doubt uses a poetics of pastische as a vehicle for an intertextual journey towards the truth and the authenticity of primary emotions. here time is immersed in a nostalgic suspense of oneiric dimension, a sort of ambiguous coma of silence and comfort, and open space embraces a psychotic landscape of solitude and accidental pleasure. fetishized surface of extreme feelings gives a stage for an unsolicited promise of unconditional love and unlimited freedom, a promise framed by sensual tension between fulfillment and expectation." Adam Budak, Kusthaus Graz, 2005 Sidewinder
There’s blood on the dress that hangs in the Airstream trailer outside 29 palms. With the pistol in her sweat palm touching his temple. Tell me what god’s gonna do for me and you know Stevie’s saying while Brother John Baptiste looks there across to where her cat seems weak and fed. All the good that comes to me from my believing man, I wanna hear about it said to me like that. Just the way you breathed it like you did 10 minutes ago when I was wrapped so well around your head. Silence then. A baby screams his mother out in the desert night...
