Mark Seliger
Dalai Lama, Washington D.C.

2011

About

Edition 1 of 9 Signed, titled, dated and numbered in pencil on verso The esteemed portrait work of Mark Seliger has accounted to his reputation as a distinguished contemporary photographer. Born and raised in Texas, he took an early interest in photography. After studying the history of documentary photography in college, he moved to New York in the 1980’s, where he began shooting for Rolling Stone. During his time at Rolling Stone, Seliger shot over 125 covers of renown artists and cultural leaders. In this black-and-white photograph, the Dalai Lama is captured in his classic robe, resting a hand over his chin. Seliger zooms up to his aging face to highlight his calm and amused expression. The image emanates the spirit of the cultural figure. In 2002, Seliger moved from Rolling Stone to Condé Nast. The photographer continues his love of the darkroom by using the platinum palladium process to create large-scale portraits that honor the creative minds of popular culture.
