Estimated timeline for production and shipping is 1 business week. About The Artist: Matthew Cronin lives and works in New York’s Lower East Side. He holds an MFA in Studio Art from University of Texas at Austin as well as a BFA in Photography from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Cronin’s process makes use of preexisting photographs which he reimagines through montage, multiple exposure, and alternate methods of scanning. His work has been exhibited internationally at galleries and museums including The Visual Arts Center, Austin; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Back Gallery Project, Vancouver, Lydian Stater, New York; and at the Singapore International Photography Festival. His work has been featured in numerous publications such as Der Greif; A New Nothing Vol. 1; Fotomen China; and Humble Arts Foundation. He has participated in residency programs at the NARS Foundation and Wassaic Project. Cronin’s work can be found in the Ogden Museum of Southern Art’s permanent collection and in the archives at the Center for Creative Photography. About the Project: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘉𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 is investigation into the electronic phantasms that emerged during the digital age and inhibit an understanding of a world increasingly defined by abstraction. Since early 2022, Matthew Cronin has been working with abstraction and continuing his exploration of cameraless photography. In 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘉𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨, Cronin has taken user-generated images posted to Twitter and transformed them into fields of pulsating color through nonstandard methods of resizing. What once was highly stylized promotional stills for private subscription websites, this content was designed to appealed to individual’s desire for connection and intimacy while simultaneously indulging their erotic fantasies. The final pictures are formed from the same set of pixels as the source, but visually bears little semblance to it. Like the fantasies sought by those on social platforms, these pictures can be anything you want them to be.
