About the Item

Hal Hirshorn makes 21st century photographs using 19th century materials and methods. Specifically, salt prints, a technique invented by William Henry Fox Talbot in 1841. The intention however is not to recreate period facsimiles. Hirshorn creates images outside of standard time, characters in an undefined spiritual location conjured by the artist’s and the viewer’s imagination. Each salt print results in an unpredictable, singular image, sometimes hard to discern. The artist’s intent is to invoke random associations which function “like dreams, they are neither right nor wrong, they just are.” The process is relatively simple. It does not require a darkroom. By coating drawing paper with salt and silver, the artist makes his own photo-paper. The negative is then laid on top of the prepared paper, then put in a frame and exposed to sunlight for several hours. The resulting image may be sharply detailed or crude and amorphous. Oblique and ephemeral, but always visually evocative. The general rather than the particular, but also that moment when the present is truly present. Made on the fly, on the run, spontaneously, this century or last century, the woman gazing out at the viewer is every woman who ever broke your heart, then and now. – Poet Max Blagg on Hal Hirshorn Salt printing was discovered in 1839 by William Fox Talbot; Talbot, frustrated with his attempts at drawing with a camera obscura, placed a sheet of drawing paper sensitized with salt and silver nitrate inside a camera obscura. His friend, chemist Sir John Herschel, gave him the formula for sodium thiosulfate to preserve the photograph - i.e. light drawing. This is the same technique used by Hal Hirshorn today. He makes his work by photographing with an 8 x 10 view camera and using a Petzval Portrait lens from 1850. He then floats a sheet of drawing paper in a solution of sea salt and gelatin. He treats the dried paper with a solution of silver nitrate after sunset (the paper is sensitive to Ultra violet light-day light), places a negative on top of the paper and under a sheet of glass in a heavy frame with steel springs on the back. He then lays the frame outside in the sun to print the photograph. He then washes the photograph in running water and tones it with a solution of gold chloride and fixes it with a solution of sodium thiosulfate and lets it dry.
