About the Item

Portrait of a seated elderly woman by Imogen Cunningham (American, 1883). Presented in a new white mat. Tag from the studio of Imogen Cunningham affixed to verso of mounting mat. ("Negative No. 96") Photo size: 7"H x 6.25"W. Imogen Cunningham Trust has verified the studio label and photograph is correct. Imogen Cunningham was born in Portland, Oregon on April 12, 1883. While at the University of Washington, Cunningham was inspired by the work of Gertrude Käsebier to take up photography. After gradating in 1907, she went to work with Edward S. Curtis in his Seattle studio. After further study in Dresden at the Technische Hochschule, she returned to Seattle and opened a photography studio. She became a sought after photographer and exhibited at the Brooklyn Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1913. She married artist Roi Partridge and moved to San Francisco in 1920. During the 1930s she contributed work for Vanity Fair and in the 1940s taught at the California School of Fine Arts. Cunningham was a nationally-known photographer at the time of her demise in San Francisco on June 24, 1976.

In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Garbo fifth on its list of the greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema. Clarence Sinclair Bull was born in Sun River, Montana, in 1896. His career began when Samuel Goldwyn hired him in 1920 to photograph publicity stills of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio's stars. He is most famous for his photographs of Greta Garbo, taken between 1926 and 1941. Bull's first portrait of Garbo was a costume study for the silent romantic drama film Flesh and the Devil in September 1926. Bull was able to study with the great Western painter...
