Photographer Boris Smelov) was a living legend of the St. Petersburg school of Photography during his lifetime and received adoration and worship from anyone ever connected with the art of light-painting. It is impossible for contemporary photographers from St. Petersburg to avoid his influence. The images that he created of St. Petersburg are not only remarkable photographs in their own right, but quite simply the most expressive portrait of the city made at the end of the last century and as significant as the poetry of Brodsky. The creative work of Boris Smelov is the most precious and brilliant phenomenon of St. Petersburg culture of the 70s, 80s and 90s. It is intimately connected with St. Petersburg, dedicated to St. Petersburg, and determined by St. Petersburg.
