Andrea Belag Beauty for Sale, 1990 Monotype on cotton rag paper 42 1/2 × 30 inches Unframed Pencil signed, dated and titled on the front; bears publisher name and copyright on the back Exquisite monotype; both gestural and minimalist. The title speaks for itself and defines the work. American painter Andrea Belag creates lush and luminous abstractions inspired by the visual and spiritual principles of Zen, as well as artists such as Mary Heilmann, Bernard Frize, and Takuro Kuwata. Crafting each piece with a variety of tools and paints, including knives, spatulas, paper towels and large brushes, Belag explores the pictorial space with both meditative purpose and fortuitous movement. Andrea Belag Biography Andrea Belag’s paintings and works on paper have been widely exhibited and collected throughout the US and internationally, in venues that include: The Jewish Museum, NY; Pera Museum, Istanbul, Turkey; Mead Museum, Amherst; Newark Museum, NJ; New Jersey State Museum, NJ; Heinz Holtmann, Cologne,Germany; Sprengel Museum, Hanover, Germany and Jeddah Collection, United States Embassy, Saudi Arabia. Recent exhibitions include; Gallery Gris, Hudson NY, Cuevas Tilleard, NY, Edward Thorp Gallery, NY, DCKT Contemporary, NY. and SHFAP, NY. Belag has been the recipient of various honors and fellowships : The Guggenheim Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation at Bellagio, Italy; National Endowment for the Arts; Yaddo Foundation, NJ State Council on the Arts. She is currently working on a commission for the MTA Arts for Transit and Urban Design that will be installed summer, 2017. The artist lives and works in New York City and Far Rockaway, Queens.
