About the Item
How we read visual signs and information and how we construct meaning as a result of our reading are central issues in my work. In my Jacquard tapestries I examine the twin practices of making and interpreting marks, of encoding and decoding.
Drawing on a variety of sources – written words, marks rendered by hand, signs, diagrams, charts, and urban vernacular – I am interested in our attempts to make sense of the world through visual structures. We are surrounded by visual manifestations of data, information, and
language; all of which contain the potential for meaning as well as misinterpretation.
Each day presents the challenge of decoding the signs we encounter.
In my tapestries I translate a variety marks into weave structures. As I work on a piece it simultaneously exists in multiple manifestations – as an image, a rendering on point paper, a simulation, and finally a woven cloth. Each version renders a different transcription of the ideas I am investigating, telling a slightly different story, adding another layer of meaning. The simulations are self-contained pieces; at the same time they carry within them all the information needed to become woven work.
Jacquard weaving is at once simple and complex. The language used to set up weave structures is straightforward and binary: the warp is either up or down. With the Jacquard loom, however, each warp thread moves independently, allowing for the fabrication of complex and intricate tapestries, and an almost infinite potential of mark making. I am interested in our attempts to make sense of the world through visual structures. We are surrounded by visual manifestations of data, information, and language - written words, marks rendered by hand, signs, diagrams, charts, scientific imaging, geological patterns – all of which contain the potential for meaning as well as misinterpretation. Each day presents the challenge of decoding the signs we encounter.
Not so much concerned with presenting a single interpretation, I see the layering of visual information as an invitation to potential readings and possible meanings.
