About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Graham Sutherland (1903–1980), titled Hybrid, originates from the 1972 edition published by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, April 5, 1972. This striking and organic composition exemplifies Sutherland’s exploration of natural form as metaphor and his mastery of symbolic abstraction. Hybrid reveals his fascination with the transformative power of nature—melding vegetal, mineral, and anatomical forms into a single, poetic vision. The lithograph captures his distinct balance between structure and emotion, merging the lyrical energy of the natural world with the spiritual and psychological resonance that defines his most celebrated work. Executed as a lithograph on velin d’Arches paper, this work measures 12.81 x 9.81 inches (32.54 x 24.92 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its technical mastery and collaboration with the foremost modern artists of the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: Graham Sutherland (1903–1980) Title: Hybrid, 1972 Medium: Lithograph on velin d’Arches paper Dimensions: 12.81 x 9.81 inches (32.54 x 24.92 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1972 Publisher: Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York Printer: Mourlot Freres, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the edition published by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, in collaboration with Leon Amiel, editeurs, New York, 1972 Notes: Excerpted from the album (translated from French), This album is the album of friendship, and I want to thank all the artists who wanted to participate. Some lithographs presented here, and whose authors have left us for too long, were made at my request for an album "Adieu a la rue de Chabrol" that I intended to publish ten years ago. So it was at this time that I was able to get the lithos of Braque, Cocteau, Derain, Giacometti and Villon. Mrs. Duthuit-Matisse and her brothers authorized me to print the composition of Henri Matisse, an unused original lithograph of the album by Teriade "La Religieuse portugaise". I am happy to have brought together so many works by contemporary artists, it is a great honor for me and I am infinitely grateful to them. Finished printing in Paris on April 5, 1972, this album was printed on velin d’Arches, in DCCC numbered examples. In addition, a number of copies were printed for artists, friends and collaborators of this album. The original lithographs were printed by Mourlot, and the typography is from Fequet and Baudier. Alain A.C. Mazo, Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, publishers. About the Publication: Souvenirs et Portraits d'Artistes (Memories and Portraits of Artists), published in 1972 by Editions A. C. Mazo et Cie., Paris, and Leon Amiel, New York, stands as one of the most significant collaborative projects in postwar French printmaking. Conceived as a tribute to artistic camaraderie and the creative spirit, the album features original lithographs by leading modern masters whose works embody the vitality and imagination of 20th-century art. Hybrid by Graham Sutherland exemplifies the album’s synthesis of lyrical form and intellectual depth, uniting organic abstraction with the precision and artistry that defined the Atelier Mourlot’s golden era of fine lithography. About the Artist: Graham Sutherland (1903–1980) was a British painter, printmaker, and designer whose profound fusion of surrealism, symbolism, and modern abstraction defined him as one of the most visionary and psychologically compelling artists of the 20th century. Born in Streatham, London, Sutherland trained as an engraver at Goldsmiths’ College before turning to painting in the 1930s, when the revolutionary ideas of Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray inspired him to move beyond realism toward a poetic and symbolic modernism. Deeply influenced by nature and the British landscape, he developed a distinctive visual language rooted in organic form, transforming trees, roots, and geological structures into metaphors for vitality, fragility, and transformation. His early surrealist landscapes—imbued with the spiritual energy of Miro and the psychological tension of Dali—positioned him at the forefront of British modernism alongside Henry Moore and Paul Nash. As an official war artist during World War II, Sutherland produced haunting depictions of bombed cities and industrial ruins that became powerful visual meditations on destruction and resilience, earning him international acclaim. In the postwar years, his paintings grew increasingly monumental and expressive, culminating in his iconic Thorn Tree and Crucifixion series, which merged Christian iconography with modernist abstraction to explore suffering and redemption. His monumental tapestry Christ in Glory for Coventry Cathedral stands as one of the masterpieces of modern religious art, while his controversial portrait of Winston Churchill demonstrated his uncompromising psychological depth. Sutherland’s influence extended across generations, shaping the work of Francis Bacon, John Piper, Keith Vaughan, and later abstract and neo-romantic painters who admired his synthesis of emotion and intellect. Exhibited widely at the Venice Biennale, the Tate, and the Museum of Modern Art, his works are housed in major collections including the Tate Britain, Centre Pompidou, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Collectors prize his art for its luminous color, organic rhythm, and spiritual power—qualities that link him to the great innovators of modernism, including Picasso, Dali, Miro, Kandinsky, Duchamp, Calder, Giacometti, and Man Ray. His highest auction record was achieved by The Crucifixion (1946), which sold for $2.1 million at Christie’s, London, on February 7, 2011, reaffirming Graham Sutherland’s enduring legacy as one of the most visionary, expressive, and collectible British artists of the 20th century.
