Joan Miró was one of the great figures of twentieth century art internationally, and he developed a close personal surrealism language that powerfully influenced both his contemporaries and subsequent generations. It was formed in Barcelona, first at the School of the Market and later at the Academy Galí, more innovative spirit. In that school and the Cercle Artistic de Sant Lluc, also in Barcelona, the young Miró meet some of his best friends, as the critic Sebastià Gasch, the poet JV Foix, the painter Josep Llorens Artigas or artistic promoter Joan Prats. Thus, from his formative years he was associated directly with the most avant-garde circles of Barcelona, and by the early date of 1918 he held his first exhibition at the Dalmau Galleries of Barcelona. In 1920 he moved to Paris and meets Picasso, Raynal, Max Jacob, Tzara and the Dadaists. These would be the crucial years of his career, in which Miró discover your personal language. In Paris he befriended André Masson, around whom the group called the Rue Blomet, future clustered core of surrealism. Thus, under the influence of surrealist poets and painters, with whom he shared many of his theoretical approach, his style is maturing; is transposed to the visual surrealist poetry, based on memory, fantasy and the irrational. From this moment his style began an evolution that leads to more ethereal works in which organic forms and figures are reduced to points, lines and spots abstract color. In 1924 he signed the first Surrealist Manifesto, although the evolution of his work, too complex, does not allow ascribe to any particular orthodoxy. His third exhibition in Paris in 1928, is his first major triumph: the Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired two of his works. From the thirties Miró is enshrined as one of the most prominent figures in the international art scene, as well as one of the key artists of the twentieth century. Returns to Spain in 1941, and that same year the Museum of Modern Art in New York organized a retrospective that will final international consecration. During the fifties he experimented with other artistic mediums, such as etching, lithography and ceramics. From 1956 until his death in 1983, he resides in Palma de Mallorca in a kind of internal exile, while growing its international fame. Throughout his life he received numerous awards, as the Grand Prix of the Venice Biennale 1954 and the Guggenheim Foundation in 1959, the Carnegie Painting in 1966, the Gold Medal of the Generalitat of Catalonia (1978) and Fine Arts (1980), and was named Doctor Honoris Causa by Harvard and Barcelona. At present its production can be seen in the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona, opened in 1975, as well as in major museums of contemporary art from around the world, such as the Thyssen-Bornemisza, the MoMA in New York, the Reina Sofia Museum Madrid, the National Gallery in Washington, Paris or MNAM Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo. and he was named Doctor Honoris Causa by Harvard and Barcelona. His paintings are known for incorporating applications of vibrant and violent colors that often possess a primal, childlike quality. . Appel attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam (1940-1943) and helped found the "Reflex" group, which became known as CoBRA (for Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam), in 1948.
