About the Item

Kosso Eloul (1920-1995) is one of Canada’s foremost sculptors. Eloul was born in Israel but educated in the United States. He first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago (under Frank Lloyd Wright) and later at the Chicago School of Design (with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy). He would represent Israel at the Venice Biennale in 1959. In the late 1960's he would settle in Toronto and became known for his large outdoor works. In many ways he was a precursor for both Richard Serra and Joel Shaprio. His powerful minimalist works can be seen throughout Toronto's downtown core in addition to many other prominent public spaces around the world from California to Israel. Eloul did several series of minimalist lithographs in the late 1960's and early 1970's with the prestigious Gemini press. Many major institutions have examples of his work, both prints and sculptures, in their permanent collections including the Brooklyn Museum, the Norton Simon Museum, the Israel Museum and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to mention a few. "Rabat" is an important work in Frank Stella's oeuvre as it is his first print, created in 1964. Unlike his future prints, this work was an adaptation of a gouache based on one of the paintings from the Moroccan Paintings series created that same year. Stella was invited by the legendary Sam Wagstaff...

  • Samurai (Octavio Paz Suite), Lithograph, 1988
    By Robert Motherwell
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), alongside Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning, made up the quartet of American abstract painters that radically defined Modern painting and established New York City as the center of the art world for the second half of the 20th century. While compared to his peers, Motherwell's works are arguably the most challenging for the uninitiated. Nevertheless, he was the unofficial spokesman of the New York School, writing and lecturing prolifically on behalf of the movement, his fellow artists, and the merits of abstraction. (Before devoting himself to painting, Motherwell had started a PhD at Harvard in philosophy. In addition to his talents as an artist, he was incredibly articulate.) As a passionate lover of poetry, Motherwell compared his own visual language to that of poetry. One of his favorite poets and dear friends was Octavio Paz. Originally from Mexico, Paz was an essayist, poet, and Nobel Prize Winner. The two shared a mutual admiration for one another and after each dedicating works to the other they decided to collaborate. Together they produced Three Poems (1987-1988), a suite of 27 lithographs with accompanying poetry by Paz translated into English. "Red Samurai...
