Kumi Sugai (1919-1996) was a Japanese painter, sculptor and printmaker, one of the first generation of the post-war Japanese artists to join the international avant-garde art scene.
Like many Asian artists of his generation, he settled in Paris and adopted a western style in his art.
Best known for his Minimalist and Hard Edge geometric abstractions, the artist was deeply influenced by the relationships between Japanese calligraphy and Western typography.
His art is associated with Pop Art movement and Abstract Art.
