About the Item

Louise Nevelson is one of the most revered and unique artists of the 20th century. (Also, an artist who continues to be undervalued - compared to her male contemporaries...On the plus side, there is tremendous opportunity for the savvy collector) Although Nevelson is best known for her work as a sculptor, like many of her American contemporaries, Nevelson explored the many different branches of printmaking, as the field experienced a mid-century renaissance. Nevelson expanded her practice as an artist by exploring printmaking. While her sculptural works used a consistent methodology, mostly favoring painted wood in black, her work as a printmaker was more experimental. Nevelson consistently tried different techniques. This work is a paradigm example of Nevelson's printmaking practice. Nevelson utilized the rare printmaking technique of cast paper, whereby paper fibre or pulp is formed using a mold, and employed it in a relief. The striking shape and features of the work have classic Nevelson shape and elaborately patterned texture, in a deep greenish slate. Not surprisingly this work can be found in several prominent museum collections including the MoMA the United States Library of Congress, the Brooks Museum of Art and several others. As interest in her work is compounding rapidly, her prints are, like the rest of her work, becoming less accessible.
