About the Item

“Dream and Refuge, 2020” by Michael Armitage (Kenyan, b. 1984) Rendered in richly layered hues - dominated by a saturated red ground that pulses with intensity - this work reveals a figure caught in a dreamlike, quasi-mythological state. The form, reclining and enveloped in a swirling network of textures and abstracted anatomy, carries the weight of Armitage’s ongoing engagement with East African narratives, colonial residues, and the search for personal and cultural sanctuary. At the center of the composition is a sinuous, ambiguous body with limbs emerging from a matrix of patterned surfaces and anatomical fragments. The face, part mask and part human, peers out with a spectral presence, suggesting both witness and subject. The figure’s body appears swollen, almost distended, adorned with marks and shapes that evoke ritual scarification, maps, or coded language. Armitage’s deft use of color-blocked lithographic layers and disorienting perspective heightens the surrealism of the image, turning flesh into terrain and consciousness into a floating, unanchored topography. Surrounding the central form are floating shapes that resemble fragments of memory or symbolic debris - bones, vessels, limbs, or otherworldly objects - each rendered in colors that both complement and disrupt the red field. These elements, while formally beautiful, suggest trauma or dislocation. The tension between the organic and the abstract, the known and the unknowable, is central to Armitage’s vision. His line and color work echo both modernist expressionism and traditional East African visual storytelling, achieving a harmony that feels both ancient and acutely contemporary. This work is a seven color lithograph on paper and is hand signed by Armitage in pencil on the verso. It is further inscribed “78/250” on the verso and is unframed. This particular work comes from the collection of art advisor and convicted felon, Lisa Schiff, who ran a multi-million dollar ponzi-like art scheme. Much of her collection was sold during bankruptcy proceedings. Size: 19.25 inches tall by 9.25 inches wide (sheet) Provenance: Collection of Lisa Schiff, New York; Acquired from the bankruptcy proceedings of the above About the artist: Drawing from historical and current events, news media, and memories of life in Kenya, Michael Armitage’s dreamlike oil paintings place European artistic techniques in dialogue with East African materials and motifs. Armitage has been the subject of several critically acclaimed solo shows in recent years at Munich’s Haus der Kunst, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, and the Museum of Modern Art in collaboration with the Studio Museum in Harlem. Trained in London at the Slade School of Fine Art and the Royal Academy of Arts, Armitage’s work recalls Paul Gauguin and Édouard Manet as well as East African modernists Meek Gichugu and Jak Katarikawe. Armitage paints on lubugo, a Ugandan bark cloth, which reveals holes and divots when beaten and stretched. Referencing mythological, colonial, and autochthonous narratives, his paintings present a cross-cultural perspective on the complex social and political realities of modern-day East Africa. Condition: Excellent original condition. All photographs are taken in a well-lit environment using studio lights (set to a cooler temperature) to reveal as much detail as possible. Colors can vary slightly depending on the temperature and strength of your lighting.
