Peter Knapp explores themes of continuity and the human connection to nature through textural, mixed-media works. On gesso-primed panels, he employs a hybrid process driven by imagination and instinct, integrating the graphic precision of woodblocks and drawing with the fluid layering of acrylic and ink. Central to his practice is the concept of "existential grit"—a rhythmic cycle of additive and subtractive marks that leaves the history of the work’s making visible on the surface. Knapp’s compositions often feature architectural and urban motifs woven into organic, ruptured textures, representing human inventiveness and its relationship with natural rhythms. This approach encourages viewers to find significance in the overlooked details of our environment, bridging the constructed world and the raw elements of the landscape.
