About the Item

Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) is revered as one of the most innovative American Pop artists. More avant-garde than Warhol and more audacious than Jasper Johns, Rauschenberg worked experimentally with many mediums over the span of six decades, striving to create boundary-pushing, curious, and thought-provoking pieces. Overlay, collage and anarchic juxtaposition of images is a constant element in his practice. Rauschenberg studied at Black Mountain College, which was known as a hub for experimental thought and practice. He developed his innovative approach to creation and collaboration, most notably with Jasper Johns. Upon moving to NYC in the 1950s, Rauschenberg and Johns began an artistic exchange that would influence both artists' styles and subjects, as they pushed the boundaries of representation. In July 1969, NASA invited Rauschenberg to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to witness the launch of Apollo 11, which culminated in the first manned landing on the Moon on July 20, 1969. Granted broad access to NASA’s facilities, archives, and personnel, the experience proved transformative for the artist. To commemorate this historic event and collaboration with NASA, he produced a series of 33 artworks: the Stoned Moon series. In addition to his own imagery, Rauschenberg incorporated photographs and other materials supplied by NASA. The project, which took nearly a year to complete, was realized at the legendary Gemini G.E.L. studios in Los Angeles. "Horn" is a wonderful example from the Stoned Moon portfolio. Featuring a Floridian bird, a reflective sphere, the Apollo 11 rocket, and grassy distortion, this lithograph conveys the sensory overload of the launch experience. In the composition Rauschenberg combines NASA images with the local flora and fauna. He emphasizes the links between nature, humans, and technological achievements. Other editions of this print are held in the permanent collection of the SFMOMA, and the Minneapolis Museum of Art. Today, Rauschenberg's work is included in public collections around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art (NYC), Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (Spain), and Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) to name a few.
