About the Item
Falling Fragments by Rosalyn Richards is a layered abstract composition that balances precision and spontaneity. Interlocking geometric forms—circles, triangles, arcs, and linear vectors—float across a softly textured ground, creating a visual field that suggests motion, collapse, and reassembly. Subtle ghosted impressions and granular passages introduce a sense of erosion, as though earlier structures remain faintly embedded beneath the surface.
Richards’s use of muted greens, charcoal blacks, and warm ochre accents establishes a restrained yet dynamic palette. The careful interplay between measured geometry and organic mark-making reflects the artist’s ongoing investigation into systems, instability, and transformation. Lines intersect, fragment, and reorient, evoking architectural diagrams, celestial mapping, or the residue of engineered forms breaking apart over time.
A sophisticated and contemplative work that exemplifies Richards’s ability to fuse mathematical order with expressive texture, Falling Fragments rewards close inspection and sustained viewing.

Rosalyn Richards
Rosalyn Richards has been a member of the Bucknell University art faculty since 1982. She has had solo shows throughout the United States, and her work is represented in many major museum collections. Artist Statement Images from particle physics, satellite photography, biotechnology,
radiology, geological survey maps, have all served as influences on my work. My paintings, prints, and drawings relate to our human need to construct our experiences in nature using involved systems of design and technology. We are unable to separate our more direct experiences of the natural world from what we know of nature through technological advancements in image making. In some of my work I have taken apart the visual language of charting, and reconstructed this language to create imaginary maps. The maps become metaphors for inner journeys, and are also meant to suggest playful and whimsical approaches to the usually serious function of diagrams. Games, puzzles, and maps can be seen as points of reference into the world of the imagination which strives to create order, systems, and microcosms out of a vaster and more unpredictable universe.
