About the Item

David Shapiro’s minimalist works are meditative and quiet. This black and tan print has a reductive Zen quality. Shapiro was born in Brooklyn in 1944 and passed away in 2014. He did his undergraduate work Pratt University and received an MFA from Indiana University. Shapiro always worked in series and his works were greatly influenced by Asian culture. He was a deep thinker and serious painter. His work is comprised of a highly personal language of signs and symbols. Circles, spirals, dots, wave and knot patterns textures resonate on richly hued, tactile surfaces of Nepalese and Japanese papers, burlap and canvas. evoking a subtle mood of contemplation. Suggesting constellations of heavenly bodies, or human thoughts, these works appear to visually and psychologically, if not mythically, intersect, overlap, and merge with one another. For over three decades, David Shapiro had over eighty solo exhibitions throughout the United States as well as in Japan, Canada, and England. His work is represented in many public, private, and corporate collections including respected institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Solomon Guggenheim Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Washington D.C., the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art in Nagoya, Japan, and the Kunsthalle der Stadt in Nuremberg, Germany. The medium of this work is drypoint, lithograph and collagraph on paper.

    By Richard Jacobs
    Located in Detroit, MI
"Travelers" is a work that displays Richard Jacobs early Balinese influence. This abstract work made with drypoint etching manifests a layer of depth and contrast that is achieved through an Indonesian technique of drawing the lines of the resist or printing it with a copper stamp that allows an artisan to selectively color the work through the soaking process. "Travelers" is exemplary of this earlier aquatint process before Jacobs would go on to apply a diversity of colors to his work. The print is 39 x 29 inches and is signed and numbered from an edition of 30 by the artist. Numbered edition may not necessarily be number 16 as there are multiple prints in the possession of Collected Detroit...
