Sarah Morris Biography:
Since the 1990s, Morris has produced a large body of work using paintings, films, site-specific wall paintings and sculptures which reflect her interest in networks, typologies, architecture and the city. Through her use both of reality and vivid, complex abstractions, Morris creates a new language of place and politics. She sees her paintings as self-generating, open to interpretation, motion and change, giving the viewer a heightened sense that they are part of a larger system. Creating a virtual architecture of forms, the work incorporates a wide array of subjects from multinational corporations, to transportation networks and maps, GPS technology and even lunar cycles. “November 2021” is part of a series of her ‘Lunar’ works which she sees as a calendar or a diary during the global pandemic, where time has become increasingly difficult to keep track of.
In her films, a parallel practice, Morris explores the psycho-geography and the dynamic nature of cities in flux through the multi-layered and fragmented narratives they contain. The situations the artist places herself and the viewers within reflect the hierarchies we inhabit. Uniquely playing with the contradiction of our complicity with structures both macro and micro, Morris is considered one of the most intriguing artists of her generation. Morris has participated in numerous international solo exhibitions including Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1999); Kunsthalle Zurich (2000); Hamburger Banhof – Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin (2001); Kunstforeningen, Copenhagen (2004); Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2005); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2005); Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover (2005); Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2006); Fondation Beyeler, Rienhen/Basel (2008); Lenbachhaus, Munich (2008); Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna (2009); Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main (2009); Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio (2012); Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York (2012); Musée National Fernard Léger, Biot (2012); Kunsthalle Bremen, Bremen (2013); M Museum, Lleuven (2015); Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2016); EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Espoo (2018); Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2018) and an upcoming retrospective at Deichtorhallen Hamburg in 2023.
