Published by: Atelier 17. Pencil signed and numbered from the limited edition of only 50. This is an extremely rare, poignant, early color etching by influential S.W. Hayter, legendary for his technical innovations in printmaking. Among the artists Hayter was credited with influencing were Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. This work is numbered 10 from the very small edition of only 50. In the foreword to the catalogue that accompanied a Hayter print retrospective at La Tortue Gallery, featuring this work, Bryan Robertson, former director of London's Whitechapel Gallery wrote: "Hayter, working always with maximum flexibility in painting, drawing, engraving and collage, has invented some of the most central and significant images of this century before most of the other artists of his generation. He is an originator, and it is a sign of this artist's vitality and youthfulness that he has never bothered to put on the mantle of elder statesman which he has an indisputable right to wear....."
More about the present piece: a poignant, scarce work from the height of Abstract Expressionism. The Medusa Galaxy was discovered around 1955 and it is probable that Hayter named the print after this, with its mythic and cosmic implications. This pencil signed color engraving is numbered from a small edition of only 50. There are very few left of these in the world, since many are in major museums already. It is signed numbered and titled on the bottom.
During WWII, as a member of the avant-garde living in exile in New York, Hayter's style moved toward Abstract Expressionism and he would famously influence Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock and many other American artists. This period coincided with his perfection of a revolutionary technique for multicolor printing on a single plate.
The high viscosity engraving offered here today is featured in Catalogue Raisonne Black/Moorhead 392. The Prints of Stanley William Hayter (Hardcover) by Peter Black (Author), Desiree Moorhead (Author).

Frame included: Measurements: Frame: 27.75 x 22.5 x 2 inches Artwork: 23.5 x 18 inches Catalogue Raisonne: K. Tyler Tyler Graphics: Catalogue Raisonné, 1974-1985, New York: Abbeville Press, 1987. p. 289. Alan Shields came of age artistically in the late 1960s in New York. Expanding the boundaries of Minimalism, he became known as a master of aesthetic invention through his wide-ranging exploration of materials and techniques. His mixed media works often contain combinations of traditional silkscreen processes combined with found materials. New York Times critic Roberta Smith wrote in her 2005 obituary for the artist: "Mr. Shields's work combined expanses of gorgeous stained color, reminiscent of Helen Frankenthaler's canvases, with the humbler crafts and a Gypsy sense of portability." Critic Robert Hughes has described Shields as a brilliant bricoleur who could, and often did, make art out of just about anything. He became an innovative printmaker, experimenting with handmade paper and turning out editions in which each print was unique. After his passing, Shields was awarded a Judith Rothschild Foundation grant given to recently deceased abstract artists whose work is of the highest quality but merits further recognition. About Alan Shields: Alan Shields (b. 1944, Herington, KS; d. 2005, Shelter Island, NY) created unique, imaginative, and theatrical structures using unconventional materials and vibrant color. His three-dimensional paintings convey a playful, deconstructive impulse through the incorporation of un-stretched hand-dyed canvas, rope, yarn, beads, and wood. Shields moved to New York City in 1968, where he showed with Paula Cooper...Category

- Nets – Mid-Century Modernism, Atelier 17By Sigismond Kolos-VariLocated in Myrtle Beach, SCSigismond Kolos-Vari, 'Nets', color etching with soft-ground and aquatint, edition 200—1 of 60 artist's proofs, 1952. Signed and dated in pencil. Numbered L/LX in pencil. Image size 11 3/4 x 15 5/8 inches (298 x 397 mm); sheet size 15 x 22 1/4 inches (381 x 565 mm). A superb, richly-inked impression, on heavy, off-white, Arches wove paper; the full sheet with margins (1 3/8 to 3 1/2 inches), in excellent condition. Published by the Guide de la Gravure, Switzerland, with their blindstamp in the bottom left sheet corner. Matted to museum standards, unframed. ABOUT THE ARTIST Sigismond Kolos-Vari (1899-1983) was born in Hungary and attended the School of Applied Arts in Budapest from 1915-1918, and then the School of Decorative Arts until 1925. The artist settled in Paris and his first one-man show in 1928 at Galerie Miromesnil, which was highly successful, led to numerous subsequent exhibitions including the prestigious Galerie Bonaparte in 1929, and Galerie Povolosky in 1930. Kolos-Vari’s early success was abruptly interrupted by the outbreak of WWII. Imprisoned in a German concentration camp, he managed to escape after two years, crossing the border into Switzerland. After the war he returned to Paris and dedicated himself to his painting, producing increasingly powerful compositions. His work was highly acclaimed when shown at the important 1946 exhibition at the Musée National d’Art Moderne de Paris, organized by Jean Cassou. The artist was subsequently approached by the eminent art dealer Jean Bucher who gave Kolos-Vary a major one-man show at his gallery in 1948. During this post-war period Kolos-Vary participated in the avant garde exhibitions the Salon de Mai, 1949-1958, the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, 1956-1961, and the Salon des Comparaisons, 1960-1962. Supported by his association with Stanley William Hayter and the landmark printmaking workshop, Atelier 17...Category
