About

Welcome to my listing for a special Limited Edition Book: 270 x 365 mm (11 x 14 inches) Boxed: 530 x 440 x 60 mm (21 x 17 x 2 inches) A unique one-off item. Hardback with a signed original drawing on the tip-in page and comes in a specially made black leather box Limited drawing edition of 50. One off, unique doodle sketches by Damien Hirst as a gift to the bookbinder/printer. Rock solid provenance and featured in a prime-time UK TV show. Texts by Hugh Allan and Annushka Shani. Published by Other Criteria (Founded by Hirst) and retails on their site for £15,600 without the original extra sketches. Following Damien Hirst’s Biennale Grand Prize, which he was awarded in 2001 for The Last Supper prints, Ljubljana International Biennale of Graphic Arts invited the artist to produce an entirely new show for their 25th Biennale in 2003. In response, Hirst exhibited his first ever exhibition of drawings which, spanning his career, consisted of approximately 100 pieces. Many were sourced from private and public collections and displayed the studious, preliminary and imaginative workings of the artist. A number of drawings dated from his early teenagehood, others were lent by close friends, who had been given personal drawings by the artist. Included in the exhibition were a number of preparatory sketches for later and larger works including paintings and sculptures. This publication reproduces over 300 drawings and with each special edition, includes a unique drawing by Hirst bound into the back (along with the unique one-off sketches of the shark and skull in the front making this a UNIQUE ONE-OFF). A fascinating and diverse insight into the artist’s working mind and methods, it manages to convey his humour and integrity in the making process. In the words of Hugh Allan, ‘these drawings should be seen as the spirits or shadows of more robust ‘living’ things… Urgent to render an explanation, Hirst has the energy of a dying man desperate to tell us a truth; as the title of the show suggests, cradle and grave bracket what lies between.’

About Damien Hirst (Artist)

British artist Damien Hirst is widely considered the enfant terrible of contemporary art. He is the most prominent of the so-called Young British Artists, or YBAs, a group, largely composed of Hirst’s classmates at Goldsmiths, in London, that began exhibiting together in warehouses and factories after 1988 and is known for the use of unconventional materials and “shock tactics.”

In the 1990s, Hirst said, “I can’t wait to get into a position to make really bad art and get away with it.” And indeed, he is notorious for piquing critics and baffling the public with such pieces as his signature glass vitrines containing dead sheep or sharks in formaldehyde, and his diamond-encrusted skull, For the Love of God.

Working primarily in sculpture, Hirst takes after French modernist master Marcel Duchamp in his use of ready-made objects and materials, which he combines to ironic effect. He often creates in series, as with The Cure (Violet) and The Cure (Turquoise), both from 2014, which are among several pill paintings referencing Andy Warhol’s embrace of mass production. Belonging to his ongoing series of “spot” paintings, begun in the 1980s, the 2005 piece Xylene Cyanol Dye Solution is striking for its machinelike, industrial uniformity and almost childlike simplicity, a seeming rebuke to the idea of the artist-as-genius.

In addition to making art, Hirst has launched stores that sell editioned works (Other Criteria), a restaurant (Pharmacy2) and even his own London museum (Newport Street Gallery).
