About the Item
KAREL APPEL (1921-2006) Famous Dutch painter and sculptor. Appel started painting at the age of fourteen and was one of the founders of the avant-garde movement COBRA (from: Copenhagen, Bruxelles, Amsterdam) in 1948. He is particularly known for incorporating a myriad of different materials into his works and painting them in bright, definitive, and bold colors. Appel’s work has been exhibited in a number of galleries, including the Anita Shapolsky Gallery in New York City, Galerie Lelong in Paris, Galerie Ulysses in Vienna, and Gallery LL in Amsterdam. His work remains highly regarded by collectors and investors alike.
Original Limited Edition Lithograph on Arches paper, 1980. Paper Size: 23.5'' x 31.5.'' Edition Size: 125, plus proofs. Signed & marked "Bon a Tirer" in pencil. Excellent Condition; never framed or matted.
What is a "Bon a Tirer," (BAT)? When the artist is satisfied with the graphic from the finished plate, he works with his printer to pull one perfect graphic and it is marked "Bon a Tirer," meaning "good to pull." The printer then compares each graphic in the edition with the BAT before submitting the graphic to the artist for approval and signature. There is standardly one BAT and usually it becomes the property of the printer or workshop printing the edition.
