Tsuchiya Rakusan
Quince Flowers and Meadow Buntings

1929

About

Meadow Buntings enjoy a dust bath beneath a blooming quince bush. Number 8 in Rakusan’s finest bird-and-flower series. The Japanese title may be translated “Quince Flowers and Meadow Buntings (Mid-Spring}.” {Boke no hana to hôjiro (sieshun)}. The small, sparrow-like birds contort themselves as they roll in the dust, which is here shown as sprinkled white gofun. This is from the first edition, with gold accents in the sky and luxurious printing. It was printed between 1929 and 1933 and has the Edition I watermark in the lower margin. Signed: Rakuzan Kyo with artist's red seal. From the series "Rakusan's Bird and Flowers". Original hand-printed Japanese color woodblock print.
