Tsuchiya Rakusan
River Plovers and Pussy Willow

1948

About

Japanese River Plovers wade in shallow water beneath branches of Rosegold Pussy Willow (Cat-willow), also a native species in Japan. Stalks of tawny grass also lean into the composition. Number 83 in Rakusan’s finest bird-and-flower series. The Japanese title may be translated “Pussywillow and Snowy Plovers (Winter)” {Nekoyanagi ni kawachidori (fuyu)}. Also known as Snowy Plovers, the birds are shown against the muted palette that is characteristic of winter. From the edition that was published between 1948 and 1955. Signed: Rakuzan Kyo-shi-sei with artist's red seal. Also signed in Romaji cursive in ink by the artist. From the series "Rakusan's Bird and Flowers". Original hand-printed Japanese color woodblock print, perfect for a midcentury modern setting.
