About the Item

Denis Diderot (1713-1784 Jean le Rond d’Alembert (1713-1783) Recueil de Planches, Sur les Sciences, les Arts Liberaux, et les Arts Mechaniques, avec Leur Explication. Francois Nicolas Martinet, pinx. Brasson. Paris, 1762 – 72. Engravings with later hand-color. 28 Volumes. 10” x 15” unframed. Diderot’s Encyclopedia, as it became commonly known, is a compendium of great achievements from the Age of Enlightenment. It is a dedication to the skilled worker, the artisan, the scientist and the naturalist. The encyclopedia was quite inclusive. It had examples of everything from the printing press to sea shells, cheese making to Asian elephants. Many facets of natural history were illustrated but it is the great detail to every ‘modern’ mechanical invention which sets this work apart. Workers are shown with their specific tools, interiors of mills and workshops abound, and products are presented in all stages of development. It is a tremendous record of a man’s labors prior to the Industrial Revolution. As the pursuits of information for natural history and science were as much vocation as any other, the volumes contained illustration and documentation on man’s continuing discoveries of birds, mammals and sea creatures. Unlike earlier works which were compromised by the imaginations of sailors and explorers, Diderot’s work is quite accurate. In addition we also see architectural elements both in as occasional backdrops and as examples of man’s achievements. These are all a part of man’s quests in exploration and man’s thirst for knowledge.
