About the Item

Teococuilco de Marcos Pérez, Oaxaca 1964 - Oaxaca 2013 This outstanding artist, born in a village in the mountains of the Zapotec peoples, was painter, engraver, muralist, and sculptor. Santiago moved to the state capital where he enrolled in Centro de Iniciación Artistica, followed by the Rufino Tamayo workshop and finally at the fine arts school of Universidad Autónoma de Oaxaca.The Rockefeller Foundation acquired his early pieces. Santiago traveled through the United States and Europe - living 3 years in Paris - absorbing references from universal art but retained his basic ideas as a colorist and the sensual interaction between line and texture. On Santiago's return from his travels, he was profoundly affected by the ghost-like appearance of his hometown, the result of the wave of migration north. To this end, he financed a vast grouping of 6 feet tall clay figures: 2501 Migrantes, an extraordinary project for which he enlisted and trained local youth. This fostering of artistic education extended to his development of other centers in his home state such as La Teleraña and La Calera to support upcoming artists. Santiago had exhibited his work in the U.S. and Europe and had over 20 individual exhibits and had participated on over 70 collectives. His Migrants were exhibited at the Forum Cultural in Monterrey in 2007. Other large-scale works include Veinte Murales Y Una Mujer Desesperada, El Golpe - 380 silhouettes in metal plate, glass and wood and Los Atlantes, sculptures with a height of approximately 12 feet. Alejandro Santiago had stated that he was most inspired la by people and their plight and in particular, his grandmother who was a healer. A man of great charm and dignity, he stated that he desired in his paintings to transcribe sensations and above all, hope. Image size is 12.5 x 19". It is signed, dated '93 and is the artist's proof.
