About the Item

Etching on laid paper Signed in plate lower left: A. Legros Published by Cadart & Luquet, Éditeurs, 79 Rue Richelieu, Paris With the blindstamp of the Société des Aquafortistes, lower margin In Le Réfectoire, Alphonse Legros depicts a quiet, ascetic moment of monastic life. A group of monks are gathered in a dimly lit refectory, seated around a long table beneath a vaulted stone ceiling. Their postures vary from humble prayer to fatigue and contemplation, while a standing brother serves bread and wine — an understated gesture that anchors the composition in both spiritual and human reality. Legros’s etching demonstrates his signature blend of moral gravity and technical restraint. The scene is rendered with firm, economical lines and a somber chiaroscuro that recalls the influence of Rembrandt and Spanish masters such as Ribera. Yet, beyond its religious setting, Le Réfectoire expresses Legros’s enduring concern with the dignity of labor, simplicity, and communal devotion. The result is a work of meditative stillness, suffused with empathy and quiet power. Superb impression on laid paper with full margins. Slight overall toning and minimal foxing in the border; the image itself pristine, richly inked, and deeply printed. Private collection, Italy. Alphonse Legros was a key figure of 19th-century French etching and later became a central influence in the English Etching Revival, following his emigration to London in 1863. A founding member of the Société des Aquafortistes, he elevated the etching medium through subjects that balanced moral gravity and psychological depth. Le Réfectoire, one of his early French masterpieces, epitomizes his devotion to monastic and peasant themes—compositions that fuse spiritual austerity with human compassion.
