Original stipple engraving on a verge type of hand laid paper. The overall size of the engraving is 15.75 inches by 12.75 inches The image size of the engraving is 14 inches by 12 inches. Beautifully professionally custom framed. Double matted with marblized paper decoration. Overall framed size is 22 by 18 inches. Provenance: a Sarasota gentleman. Engraving: ‘Innocent Captivation – Amusement Pastorale’. (Countryside amusements.) This engraving shows a young woman sitting beside a tree, resting a rake against her left shoulder, smiling down at two little boys, one of which lies on against the verge at her feet, the other kneeling beside him, holding a bird in a cage, with fields, harvesters and a distant town in the background to right. Rare and attractive romantic print. This original antique print was published by Anthony Cardon in London in 1801. Henry Singleton (1766-1839) was an English painter. Antoine-Alexandre-Joseph Cardon (1739-1822), also known as Cardon the elder to distinguish him from his son Anthony Cardon, was a Belgian painter, portraitist and engraver.
