About the Item

Etching on laid paper Signed in plate lower left: Armand Gautier Published by Cadart & Luquet, Éditeurs, 79 Rue Richelieu, Paris With the blindstamp of the Société des Aquafortistes, lower margin In Le Travail (“Work”), Armand Gautier pays tribute to the quiet heroism of daily labor through a pair of intimate vignettes — one depicting a man sawing wood in a rustic courtyard, the other a woman absorbed in washing clothes. Together, these complementary images form a poignant study of endurance and dignity, uniting the masculine and feminine expressions of honest toil. Gautier’s fine, deliberate etching technique reveals his deep sympathy for working-class life. His careful modulation of light and shadow transforms ordinary gestures into acts of grace, while his understated realism reflects the moral spirit of mid-19th-century French art. A friend of Corot and a member of the circle around the Société des Aquafortistes, Gautier was among the early advocates of etching as an independent, expressive medium rather than a reproductive craft. Excellent, rich impression on cream laid paper; wide margins; slight foxing and soft toning at the sheet edges, image clean and well-preserved. Armand Gautier, sometimes called “le peintre des humbles,” was known for his compassionate depictions of rural and domestic subjects. Le Travail stands as a testament to his humanist vision and to the etching revival’s democratic ideal — to ennoble everyday life through the intimacy of the artist’s line. This sheet was issued by Cadart & Luquet for the Société des Aquafortistes, the pioneering Parisian association that promoted original etchings by leading artists of the 1860s.
