About the Item
Lithograph on wove paper, realized in 1838.
Signed and dated in the plate.
Image 19.5x28
This finely executed lithograph by Auguste Raffet depicts two Hungarian fishermen on the banks of the Danube, engaged in their work with nets and simple wooden boats, while the wide river landscape stretches into the distance. The composition is part of Raffet’s celebrated travel series Hongrie et Valachie (Hungary and Wallachia), published in Paris in 1843, documenting the artist’s journey along the Danube.
Raffet, one of the foremost French lithographers of the 19th century, was renowned for his ability to combine detailed observation with a strong sense of atmosphere. Here, he captures the daily life and customs of the Danube region with remarkable precision, conveying both the rugged simplicity of the fishermen’s labor and the majesty of the riverine setting.
The sheet shows typical age-related foxing throughout, particularly in the margins, though the image remains strong and clear. Wide margins, with the title and publisher’s details printed below the image.
A fine example from Raffet’s series of travel lithographs, offering a valuable glimpse into 19th-century Hungarian river life.
