"Postcard from Paris" Satirical Lithograph
Social-commentary Screen Print by Charles Bragg (American, 1931-2017). A nude woman wrapped in beaded necklaces poses in front of an older man operating an antique camera. The head of a dog is visible between the two of them, looking wide-eyed. The room is divided by a brown drapery covering half of the green, patterned wallpaper behind the woman. Leafy plants are positioned behind the man, breaking up the line of the curtain.

Charles Bragg (American, 1931-2017) was a painter, sculptor, and illustrator of commentary on human behavior, based out of Los Angeles, California. Bragg often injected his sense of humor and appreciation of satire into his subjects, many of which are cartoonish and seem half human and half animal. He also depicted serious subjects, ones that become poignant commentaries on the human condition.
Bragg was born in St. Louis Missouri in 1931. His parents were vaudeville performers, and he spent most of his young life traveling on tour with them. During his teenage years, he went to New York's High School of Music & Art in Harlem. At 18, he ran away with his high school sweetheart, fellow artist Jennie Tomao.
Before pursuing art, Bragg worked as a cow driver, a truck driver, a stand-up comedian, and a factory worker. He eventually settled in California, where he began his artistic career. He started by painting portraits of wealthy families, as well as offering lessons. He began to pursue his own creative work and experienced some success. His success came from the humor and satirical style of his work, which often portrayed flaws in American society. His political opinions are featured in his work. Bragg has referred to himself as a "devoted student of the human race" and an "observer."
Bragg's works have been showcased in museums and exhibits around the world, and he has had work commissioned by Playboy magazine. In 1986, PBS made a documentary about him called "Charles Bragg - One of a Kind." One of Bragg's lithographs, The Screen Goddess, is featured prominently in the opening scene of the 1992 Robert Altman film, The Player.

Charles Bragg
Charles Bragg, born in 1931 in St. Louis, Missouri, was an American artist, author and one of the art world’s best-known satirists. His works often featured celebrities or ordinary people depicted in a humorous—and sometimes macabre fashion—across his sculptures, stories, prints, and paintings. “You observe the human race and the world, and, if you don't get a kick out of it. I think you're missing something,” Bragg once mused. Bragg attended the High School of Music and Art in Harlem before moving to California. His early visual art stemmed from commissioned portraits, and, over time, he began to inject his own political views in sharp satires of society at large, which brought him acclaim and critical success. He was the recipient of numerous honors, notably including the Gold Medal from the National Society of Illustrators as well as the Award of Merit from the Art Directors Guild of New York. Today, his works can be found in the collections of the Pushkin Museum in Moscow; the Albrecht Museum of Art in St. Joseph, Missouri; the Loch Haven Art Center in Orlando, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among others. Bragg died on January 9, 2017 at the age of 85.
