Donald Sultan
Donald Sultan is a distinguished painter, sculptor, and printmaker who rose to prominence in the late 1970s as part of the “New Image” movement in New York City.
Sultan has a unique artistic method and innovative approach to traditional subject matter. Known as Abstract Representation, Sultan’s paintings, prints and other art are characterized by the use of geometric black forms set against organic areas of bright color, thus bringing an abstract sensibility to his iconographic images of still life. Throughout his career he has revisited and reinvented still life, using images of lemons, poppies, playing cards, fruits, flowers, and other objects. Sultan’s lemons, a recurrent theme in his artworks, have in fact become an iconic image all over the world.
“All of the images of those dark pictures are really about the architecture in the paintings; they seem so massive and strong and permanent, but nothing is permanent,” Sultan has said. “The image in the front is very fragile, but it conveys the loaded meaning of everything that is contained in the painting.”
Sultan is considered to be at the forefront of contemporary art. Although his paintings are often classified as landscapes and still lifes, Sultan states that they are first and foremost abstracts. Besides paintings, drawings, and sculptures, he has created many editions. Sultan’s prints are unique: he uses specific materials like “flocking” to create expressive and powerful prints that are reminiscent of his forceful paintings. Since his first solo exhibition in 1977, Sultan’s artistic career has progressed rapidly; his works are part of the most prominent public and private collections to be found across the globe.

- White Tulips and Vase, Feb 25 - Contemporary, 21st Century, Silkscreen, TulipsBy Donald SultanLocated in Zug, CHDonald Sultan, White Tulips and Vase, Feb 25 White Tulips and Vase, Feb 25 - Contemporary, 21st Century, Silkscreen, Tulips Silkscreen Edition of 50 117 x 117 cm (42.1 x 42.1 in) Signed, dated, numbered, and titled, accompanied by Certificate of Authenticity In mint condition, as acquired from the publisher White Tulips and Vase, Feb 25, 2014, belongs to Sultan’s famous Flower series. The artist is credited for the revival of the still life tradition where the image is deconstructed to the basic elements, thus Sultan’s work remains both abstract and representational. "The images... are really about the architecture in the paintings; they seem so massive and strong and permanent but nothing is permanent." — Donald Sultan White Tulips and Vase, Feb 25, 2014, represents the Sultan's still-life, where the shape of the object is reduced to the bare essentials. The image reveals one of the key features of Sultan’s work - the material juxtaposition- the contrast of a weighty background with ethereal shapes of the flowers. The printing technique translates the Sultan’s original paintings’ texture: linoleum, tar, flocking, plaster, tile, wood. This work is a silkscreen with enamel inks and tar-like texture on 4-ply museum board. - An Organised Whole - Contemporary art, 21st Century, Landscape, ContemporaryBy Tacita DeanLocated in Zug, CHTacita Dean An Organised Whole 2021 Screenprint Edition of 125 60 × 76 cm (23.62 × 29.92 in) Signed, numbered and dated In mint condition Tacita Dean, along with seven other leading international artists, were asked to create a print to celebrate Tate Modern’s 21st anniversary. Tacita Dean works in a large number of techniques in media ranging from painting to photography and film, frequently combining more than one of them. She addresses issues relating to the passage of time, exploring what we remember and how we remember it. Often her art revolves around decay and loss as triggers of memories. For her Tate Modern 21 Years print Tacita Dean compounds the traditional ideas of landscape, and still life in a single collaged image. The background is from Tacita's extensive vintage postcard collected by the artist in her visits to European flea markets, while the black and white object is from her Father’s collection of flints. The foregrounding of the flint changes its scale, suggesting something more monumental than a simple flint, and having too the characteristics of a Henry Moore public sculpture. "My relationship to film begins at the that moment of shooting, and ends in the moment of projection. Along the way there are several stages of magical transformation that imbue the work with varying layers of intensity." —Tacita Dean TACITA DEAN Tacita Dean is a dedicated conceptual artist working primarily in film. Her eloquent 16 and 35mm analogue films are carried by a sense of history, time and place, and a fascination with the unique qualities of film itself. She was 17 years old and she found an old wind-up Standard-8 camera in his study. Being clockwork, ‘it didn’t need a battery, so I put a film in that’. And away she went. Influenced by a range of artists and writers, including Marcel Broodthaers...Category
