About the Item

Dorothy Simpson Krause’ “Save the Home” (1991) is an early digital collage print in which the artist has layered multiple images creating new meanings. Here, Old Master painter Raphael’s iconic work “Madonna della Sedia” (1513-14) is juxtaposed with the image of a poster published in 1917 by the National American Woman Suffrage Association (illustrations by artist Mary Ellen Sigsbee) titled “What Breaks Up the Home? What Will Save the Home?” In warm earthy browns and pinks this work was executed with a dot matrix printer and the surface has a soft, textile-like quality. Krause is a painter, collage artist and printmaker with long experience of incorporating digital mixed media into her art. She is deeply inspired by history, nature, travel, and innovative art making processes. Her work is exhibited regularly in galleries and museums and featured in numerous current periodicals and books. Krause is Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts College of Art where she founded the Computer Arts Center and a member of Digital Atelier®, an artists collaborative. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and symposia and a consultant for manufacturers and distributors of products which may be used by fine artists. 'Papiers collés' or collage was first used as an artist's technique in the early twentieth century to generate a kind of abstraction. Digital collage allows the artist to appropriate or reuse images in original compositions, thereby creating new meanings. The print is 13.25 x 16 inches, in a silver metal 23.25 x 24.25 inch frame. While the price includes the frame, it shows some light wear consistent with the age of the work. The work is in good condition but shows some abrasion on the lower left.
