"Diane Chasseresse, " Original Color Lithograph signed by Gaston De Latenay

1896

About the Item

"Diane Chasseresse" is an original color lithograph signed by the artist Gaston de Latenay. It is edition 36/100, which is written in the lower right. This print depicts a number of women in dresses in the woods. The central woman is facing her compatriots in the woods. Her dress is light and appears to float around her with incredibly fine floral print. The color of the print is extremely light yellows, oranges, and pinks, giving the piece a delicate, dreamlike, and sunny quality. 16 3/4" x 11 3/4" art 26 1/4" x 21 1/4" framed Framed to conservation standards. Matted with 100% rag matting and held in a slim gold metal frame. The gold finish of the moulding both compliments and enhances the delicate colors of the lithograph. A great French painter, lithographer, and etcher, Gaston de Latenay (1859-1940) studied briefly at the Academie Julian, Paris, but was mostly self-taught. During his long and successful career, de Latenay stood apart from all movements and schools of artistic thought to develop his own poetic vision of nature. He combined Japanese influences with lyricism. Many Impressionist artists were influenced by his remarkable studies of light effects. This element is clearly evident in his early original etchings and marine compositions. Gaston de Latenay’s art won awards at the Universal Expositions of 1886, 1889, and 1900. By this time his etchings were published by the influential Paris publisher, Edmond Sagot. De Latenay was a full member of both the Societe des Artistes Francais and the Societe des Aquarellistes Francais. Many of his fine landscapes and coastal views depicted scenes in Brittany, Artois, and Belgium. One contemporary scholar wrote of his fine etchings, "He is a master in expressing the melancholy aspect of a beautiful park on a golden autumn evening when the red leaves drop into the calm waters of the Bassin which reflect pale moonbeams filtering through dark trees."

  • 'Distribution of Goods to the Gros Ventres' lithograph by John Mix Stanley
    By John Mix Stanley
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
In the mid-nineteenth century, the United States government set out to survey and document its newly acquired lands and territories west of the Mississippi. The goals of these surveys were manifold: to produce topographical maps, to document flora and fauna, and to document natural resources to build the emerging US economy. These surveys, and the images from them, also functioned to build the new sense of American identity with the landscape, condensing vistas into the 'picturesque' tradition of European image making. Thus, the entire span of US territory could be seen as a single, cohesive whole. This lithograph comes from one of six surveys commissioned by the Army's Topographic Bureau in 1853, which sought to find the best route to construct a transcontinental railroad. The result was a thirteen-volume report including maps, lithographs, and technical data entitled 'Explorations and Surveys to ascertain the most practicable and economical route for a Railroad from the Mississippi river to the Pacific Ocean.' In particular, the print comes from the northern survey, commanded by Isaac Stevens, which explored the regions between the 47th and 49th parallels. In this image, Stanley documented the encounter with the Gros Ventre people at Milk River. The explorers were invited to the Gros Ventres camp and the two groups exchanged gifts in friendship. The Stevens Party provided "... blankets, shirts, calico, knives, beads, paint, powder, shot, tobacco, hard bread, etc." The image likewise alludes to how, in 1855, Isaac Stevens, concluded a treaty (Stat., L., XI, 657) to provide peace between the United States and the Blackfoot, Flathead and Nez Perce tribes. The Gros Ventres signed the treaty as part of the Blackfoot Confederacy, whose territory near the Three Fork area became a common hunting ground for the Flathead, Nez Perce, Kootenai, and Crow Indians. 5.75 x 8.75 inches, image 6.5 x 9.25 inches, stone 17 x 20 inches, frame Artist 'Stanley Del.' lower left Entitled 'Distribution of Goods to the Gros Ventres' lower center margin Publisher 'Sarony, Major & Knapp. Lith.s 449 Broadway N.Y.' lower right Inscribed 'U.S.P.R.R.
