About the Item

Heinrich Campendonk Krefeld 1889 - 1957 Amsterdam Reclining female nude with cow and goat, 1918 Woodcut on Japanese paper Signed and dedicated in pencil lower left "for Lasar Segall Nov. 1920" Image size 16 x 33 cm Frame: 48 x 67 cm Catalogue raisonné Engels 38 Provenance: Galerie Rider Munich, private collection Wiesbaden Good condition, slightly browned After studying at the Krefeld School of Applied Arts under the Dutch artist Johan Thorn Prikker, Heinrich Campendonk accepted an invitation from Franz Marc to move to Sindelsdorf in Upper Bavaria in 1911, where he settled. It was during this period that he discovered the fundamental theme of his work: the depiction of harmony between humans and animals, creation, and the cycle of eternal becoming and passing away. In addition to paintings, he produced watercolors, gouaches, and his first woodcuts. In Sindelsdorf, Campendonk met other members of the "Blauer Reiter" artists' association and participated in the group's exhibitions that same year. Two years later, he also exhibited with them at the "First German Autumn Salon" of the "Sturm" in Berlin, directed by Herwarth Walden. During these years, his artistic work is influenced by Marc, Macke, and Kandinsky and reaches one of its first peaks. A strictly geometric formal language is combined with colors in pure complementary contrasts to create a dynamic, rhythmic formal language. In 1916, Campendonk moved to Seeshaupt on Lake Starnberg, from where he undertook extensive travels. His painting was now characterized by softly flowing forms, large, calm surfaces of intense luminosity, and a lyrical, often fairy-tale-like mood. He created works using the technique of reverse glass painting. In 1926, the artist was appointed professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Campendonk gained artistic recognition from the mid-1920s onwards, particularly through the execution of numerous stained glass windows in churches and public buildings (the state parliament building and St. Paul's Church in Düsseldorf, Essen Cathedral, etc.). When he was dismissed from his teaching position in 1933, he emigrated to Belgium, where he accepted a teaching position in "monumental and decorative arts" at the Rijksakademie van beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam in 1935. Campendonk did not return to Germany after the end of the war. He continued to work as a teacher and received numerous commissions for stained glass windows in the Netherlands and Germany. In 1956, he was honored with the Quellinus Prize of the City of Amsterdam and was knighted in the Order of "De Nederlandse Leeuw." Campendonk died in Amsterdam in 1957.

'Improvisation 7' original first ed. woodcut from 'Klänge' by Wassily Kandinsky
By Wassily Kandinsky
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present woodcut print comes from 'Klänge (Sounds),' a book of original graphics and poetry by Wassily Kandinsky. This first edition was released in an edition of 300, each book signed and numbered by the artist. The title of the album and this particular print, 'Improvisation,' demonstrated Kandinsky's interest in music and how abstract musical forms could be translated into images on a two-dimensional surface. This particular composition is difficult to read, but through the abstraction, one can make out various figures and a landscape beyond. 7.5 x 5 inches, image 22 x 19.5 inches, frame Woodcut in black ink on laid paper (watermark Van Gelder Zonen) Signed with encircled 'K' in the block, lower right Framed to conservation standards using 100 percent acid free archival materials including silk-lined matting with 1/4 inch bevel, museum glass, and a gold-gilded moulding Ref. Roethel 124 The Museum of Modern Art described 'Klänge (Sounds)' as follows: Vasily Kandinsky's self-described "musical album," Klänge (Sounds), consists of thirty-eight prose-poems he wrote between 1909 and 1911 and fifty-six woodcuts he began in 1907. In the woodcuts Kandinsky veiled his subject matter, creating increasingly indecipherable images (though the horse and rider, his symbol for overcoming objective representation, runs through as a leitmotif). This process proved crucial for the development of abstraction in his art. Kandinsky said his choice of media sprang from an "inner necessity" for expression: the woodcuts were not merely illustrative, nor were the poems purely verbal descriptions. Kandinsky sought a synthesis of the arts, in which meaning was created through the interaction of, and space between, text and image, sound and meaning, mark and blank space. The experimental typography shows his interest in the physical aspects of the book. Klänge is one of three major publications by Kandinsky that appeared shortly before World War I, alongside Über die Geistige in der Kunst (Concerning the Spiritual in Art) and the Blaue Reiter almanac...
