"CROQUIS D'ÉTÉ (Plate No. 5) LD 3203" is a 2nd state lithograph by Honore Daumier. Daumier initialed the work in the lower left corner. It depicts a man and a woman sitting at a table in a restaurant as their waiter brings them a large melon. The text narrating the caricature cartoon is below the image and is as follows: Original Text: LA FEMME. - Mais, garçon.... nous vous demandons un peu de melon et vous nous apportez un monstre!... LE MARI. - N'aie pas peur, ma bonne..., nous serons deux contre un...... Translation: THE LADY: Waiter we ordered a slice of melon, and you are serving us such a monster! THE GENTLEMAN: Don't worry, darling, it'll be two against one! Artwork Size: 8 5/8" x 10 5/8" Frame Size: 17 5/8" x 20 1/8" Artist Bio: Honoré Daumier (1808 – 1879) was a French printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor, whose many works offer commentary on social and political life in France in the 19th century. A prolific draftsman who produced over 500 paintings, 4000 lithographs, 1000 wood engravings, 1000 drawings, 100 sculptures he was perhaps best known for his caricatures of political figures and satires on the behavior of his countrymen, although posthumously the value of his painting has also been recognized.
