Some surface marks and small areas of discoloration. In good condition Notes: This etching is after a painting by French artist Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard (1825-1902). Printed in sanguine. Partial unidentified watermark right center edge. This etching was published by Gazette des Beaux-Arts. The Gazette des Beaux-Arts was a French art review, found in 1859 by Édouard Houssaye, with Charles Blanc as its first chief editor. Assia Visson Rubinstein was chief editor under the direction of George Wildenstein from 1928 until 1960. Her papers, which include all editions of the Gazette from this period, are intact at the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne in Dorigny. The Gazette was a world reference work on art history for nearly 100 years - one other editor in chief, from 1955 to 1987, was Jean Adhémar. It was bought in 1928 by the Wildenstein family, whose last representative was Daniel Wildenstein, its director from 1963 until his death in 2001. The review closed in 2002. Biography: Léopold Flameng (22 November 1831, Brussels – 5 September 1911, Courgent) was a French engraver, illustrator and painter. He was born of French parents. His first artistic studies were with Luigi Calamatta and Jean Gigoux. His skill as engraver was noticed by Charles Blanc and his collaboration in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts with fellow engraver Léon Gaucherel helped ensure the publication's reputation. He eventually provided one hundred illustrations. He was a medallist at the Exposition Universelle (1878) and was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1898 . Known for his etchings of works by Jan van Eyck, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Ingres and Delacroix, he illustrated several books on Paris and numerous literary works of classical and contemporary authors, including Boccaccio, Paul Scarron, Victor Hugo and François Coppée. In good condition, on old laid paper with thread margins on three sides, trimmed on the platemark bottom right and bottom, and archival mounting. h: 4.5 x w: 3 in / h: 11.4 x w: 7.6 cm A very good impression of this rarity. Hollstein indicates that earlier impressions, such as this one, do not have a scratch above the head of the Virgin. Beham was one of the Northern Renaissance Little Masters, so called because of their eminence in producing small-scale engravings such as the Virgin and Child with a Pear. Beham was born in Nuremberg in 1500, and may have trained under Durer, though his training is no more certain than that of his younger brother Barthel.     Study of Six Heads is a beautiful black and white etching with drypoint interventions on paper, realized at the end of XVIII century by the French artist Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (Lyon, 1736- 1810). Six study od heads ( four elder men, a middle-aged man at the center, and a woman with turbant) etched with a superb technique and an incredible draftsmanship are drawn to different scales and with different degrees of finish, have the dignity of six different portraits with the same passion and effort. Signed on plate on lower right margin “De Boissieu”. Inscription ( number plate) on higher-right corner "10". This old master’s original print with lifetime impressions, is in very good conditions, except for a usual yellowing of the paper above all on the edges and some signs of the time,do not affect the image. Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (Lyon,1736 –1810) Jean-Jacques de Boissieu was a French artist studied at the École de Dessin in Lyon, but he was mostly self-taught. His first prints were realized between 1758–64. When he went to Italy in the retinue of the ambassador and Duc de la Rochefoucauld d’Enville, he had the lifechanging encounter: he met Voltaire and he entered in the world of luminaries, he had the opportunity of realizing some plates for the Diderot-d’Alembert’s Encyclopèdie. Then he continued to produce prints in Lyon, Boissieu made many etchings of the Roman and Dutch countryside, as well as the French countryside around Lyon, which earned him a reputation as the last representative of the older etching...
