About the Item

Etching on laid paper.  Signed in plate lower right: J. Michelin.  Published by Cadart & Luquet, Éditeurs, 79 Rue Richelieu, Paris.  With the blindstamp of the Société des Aquafortistes, lower margin.  In Rivière d’Yères, Jules Michelin presents a scene of quiet natural grandeur, transforming a modest French riverbank into a lyrical study of light, foliage, and reflection. The composition unfolds within dense vegetation — trees rise on either side of the mirrored water, their branches delicately etched to capture the interplay of shadow and sunlight filtering through the canopy. Two small figures, barely perceptible on the right, emphasize the stillness and scale of the surrounding landscape. Michelin’s technique demonstrates his refined tonal control and mastery of atmospheric depth. Each stroke of the etching needle conveys texture and rhythm, from the still surface of the water to the intricate density of the leaves. His approach aligns closely with the Barbizon School, yet his sensibility remains distinct — more introspective, focusing not on rustic labor but on the meditative harmony between man and nature. The result is a deeply poetic work: a study of the landscape’s inner life, balancing precision with reverie. Excellent impression with full margins on laid paper. Very faint foxing in the outer margins; image itself in pristine state with strong contrasts and superb plate tone. Jules Michelin, a painter and etcher associated with the Barbizon circle, was among the early members of the Société des Aquafortistes, which sought to elevate etching as an independent art form. His works, often depicting the French countryside, reveal a delicate balance between structure and spontaneity. Rivière d’Yères stands as one of his most mature efforts—a masterclass in natural observation and expressive restraint, admired by contemporaries such as Corot and Daubigny for its sincerity and compositional purity.
