About the Item

The Equestrian by Leroy Neiman is a framed limited edition no. 238/300 serigraph signed in pencil by the artist and published on Arches paper by Knoelder Publishing , Inc, 1981. This original serigraph is framed in a burnished silver frame with a white mat and a silver fillet. In excellent condition and comes with certificate of authenticity. LeRoy Neiman ( 1921 – 2012 ) born in Saint Paul, Minnesota is known for his brilliantly colored and energetic images of sporting events and is one of the most popular contemporary American sports artists. His art career started during World War II when he painted sets for the Red Cross shows and murals in the mess halls. After the war he studied at Saint Paul School of Art and The Art Institute of Chicago where he taught figure drawing and fashion illustration for a decade after graduation. In 1953 Neiman won 1st prize for his oil painting “Ilde Boats” at the Twin City Show and became somewhat of a celebrity with museums all over the country acquiring his work including Minneapolis Art Institute, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Carnegie Pittsburgh International Exhibition of Contemporary Painting. In 1954 Neiman was hired to illustrate a short story by Hugh Hefner who was just launching his new magazine Playboy. Thus began a 50 year relationship including a Playboycolumn titled ” Man at His Leisure ” that Neiman wrote and illustrated for 15 years. Over his life time Neiman became known for his paintings of major figures in the arts, politics and sports. He also went on to create numerous foundations to support and enhance arts education for adults and children. Neiman worked in oil, enamel, watercolor, pencil drawings, pastels, serigraph and some lithographs and etching. He was listed in Art Collector’s Almanac, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in American Art, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World and he was a member of the Chicago Society of Artists. His works have been displayed in museums, sold at auctions, and displayed in galleries all over the world as well as in private and corporate collections. His work is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Whitney Museum, Wadham College at Oxford, the State Hermitage Museum in Russia. He was the official artist for ABC-TV at the Olympic Games in 1972 , 1976, 1980 and often painted or sketched on live television. With the camera recording his painting progress Neiman interpreted the drama of the Olympic Games and the Super Bowls for an audience of millions.
