Linda Stein
Looking Within 392 - Signed, Limited Edition LGBTQ+ Contemporary Fine Art Print

2003, 2021

About the Item

Linda Stein's Below the Eyes prints draw from her Profiles series—drawings, collages and paintings of facial profiles she made in the 1960s and 1970s when she was coming to terms with her sexuality. These facial profiles all start below the eyes, reflecting her need as a youth to avoid being "seen" because she felt different at a time when homosexuality was considered anathema. This print ships directly from the artist's studio and is an edition of 35. Stein's works are in more than 25 museum permanent collections, including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Georgia Museum of Art, and Ringling Museum of Art in the US; Victoria Gallery & Museum and Manchester Art Gallery in the UK; Espoo Museum of Modern Art in Finland; and Konstmuseet i Skövde in Sweden.

"An image taken in Pushkar during what was to be a memorable trip and the last link with normality before the pandemic took hold. We travelled around India, the days becoming more and more precious as we got the sense of Covid's restrictive net closing in around the world. The image was finished some months later, while fully in the grasp of a second lockdown. The addition of gold leaf symbolised for me a sense of hope and the spiritual energy with which I will always associate India, and especially Pushkar." - Valda Bailey...
