Marc Chagall
Described by art critic Robert Hughes as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century," the Russian-French modernist Marc Chagall worked in nearly every artistic medium. Influenced by Symbolism, Fauvism, Cubism and Surrealism, he developed his own distinctive style, combining avant-garde techniques and motifs with elements drawn from Eastern European Jewish folk art.
Born Moishe Segal in 1887, in Belarus (then part of the Russian empire), Chagall is often celebrated for his figurative paintings, but he also produced stained-glass windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, in France; for the United Nations, in New York; and for the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, as well as book illustrations, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine-art prints. Characterized by a bold color palette and whimsical imagery, his works are often narrative, depicting small-village scenes and quotidian moments of peasant life, as in his late painting The Flight into Egypt from 1980.
Before World War I, Chagall traveled between St. Petersburg, Paris and Berlin. When the conflict broke out, he returned to Soviet-occupied Belarus, where he founded the Vitebsk Arts College before leaving again for Paris in 1922. He fled to the United States during World War II but in 1947 returned to France, where he spent the rest of his life. His peripatetic career left its mark on his style, which was distinctly international, incorporating elements from each of the cultures he experienced.

The Gazette des Beaux-Arts was a French art review, found in 1859 by Édouard Houssaye, with Charles Blanc as its first chief editor. Assia Visson Rubinstein was chief editor under the direction of George Wildenstein from 1928 until 1960. Her papers, which include all editions of the Gazette from this period, are intact at the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne in Dorigny. The Gazette was a world reference work on art history for nearly 100 years - one other editor in chief, from 1955 to 1987, was Jean Adhémar. It was bought in 1928 by the Wildenstein family, whose last representative was Daniel Wildenstein, its director from 1963 until his death in 2001. The review closed in 2002. Biography: Henri Fantin-Latour, in full Ignace-Henri-Jean-Théodore Fantin-Latour (born Jan. 14, 1836, Grenoble, France—died Aug. 25, 1904, Buré), French painter, printmaker, and illustrator noted for his still lifes with flowers and his portraits, especially group compositions, of contemporary French celebrities in the arts. Fantin-Latour’s first teacher was his father, a well-known portrait painter. Later, he studied at the school of Lecoq de Boisbaudran and attended the École des Beaux-Arts. He exhibited at the official French Salons, but in 1863 he also showed his work in the rebel Salon des Refusés. Although academic in manner, Fantin-Latour was independent in style. Biography: Janusz de Rola (1906-1991) was born in Poland to a family of the princely nobility. His father is friends with the Emperor of Austria-Hungary the famous Franz Joseph. Having studied at Vienna (Austria), he entered the diplomatic service as vice-consul of Poland in Sicily and is pursuing a cultural and diplomatic career until 1939. A volunteer in 1939 in the Polish forces fighting alongside the French troops, the hazards of war led him to Nice. He will live there after the armistice, to meet with his wife. Then he will live in Vienna in the 1960s (Salesianer Gasse 7), then in the Var, Pignans (the field of Cressonniere from 1971) and finally in Gonfaron from 1981 until his death in 1991. He holds a "Nansen Passport", he will remain stateless after the war. Between 1940 and 1950 he was a pupil of the painter Sylvain Vigny. He joins a group where Picasso whose face he meets. Since the fifties of Janusz ROLA imposes his figurative painting, including his famous "elegant" works acquired by larger collections. In the early 1970s he met the painter Roger Boubenec who became his friend and who said of him: "He was the man of Europe. Painter, poet, musician To him I owe the visual sense the composition ".
